LAHORE – The Lahore High Court on Monday reserved its verdict on multiple bail petitions filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan in connection with the May 9 riots cases.
A LHC two-member bench led by Justice Shehbaz Rizvi heard the arguments related to eight separate cases registered against Imran Khan. The cases based on the violent protests and acts of vandalism that occurred across various cities on May 9, 2023 after his brief arrest.
After hearing the arguments from the prosecution and the defense side, the court reserved its decision on the bail applications.
Earlier this month, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore had dismissed the police request to conduct polygraph and photogrammetric tests of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan in connection with a pending terrorism case.
The court observed that police had already been granted two opportunities to carry out the tests, but failed to proceed.
The judge remarked that the accused was given sufficient chances to establish his innocence but declined to cooperate, thereby forfeiting those opportunities.
“This is a unique case where the accused is refusing to prove his innocence. Providing a third opportunity would be nothing more than a waste of time,” the court observed in its written order.
The court further asked how the investigation could proceed if the accused persistently refused to undergo the required tests. The judge ruled that there was no need to grant further opportunities.
The ATC, later, directed the investigating officer to complete the investigation through all available legal means, without relying on polygraph or photogrammetric testing.
The case is linked to the ongoing investigation against Imran Khan in connection with the May 9 riots and other related incidents.
