ISRAEL’S recognition of Somaliland as an independent state marks a dangerous and unprecedented move in the international community.
This unilateral action completely ignoring international laws and norms further highlights Israel’s consistent disregard for the sovereignty of states and the principles of the UN Charter under which countries are required to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of other states.
Somalia, a member of the UN, has consistently maintained its position that Somaliland is an integral part of its territory. By siding with Somaliland, Israel has directly undermined Somalia’s sovereignty, setting a dangerous precedent that could potentially unravel international borders elsewhere. This move also exposes Israel’s expansionist policies, which have long been criticized in the context of its own occupation of Palestinian territories. In response to Israel’s provocative action, Pakistan, along with 20 other nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), has condemned this recognition in the strongest terms. These countries have united in their unequivocal rejection of any actions that challenge Somalia’s territorial integrity. The joint statement released by these nations highlights that Israel’s decision constitutes a grave violation of international law and a direct threat to international peace and security. It also expressed their concern that such measures could fuel further instability in the Horn of Africa and beyond, particularly in the volatile Red Sea region. The recognition of Somaliland by Israel should be viewed not only as an affront to Somalia but also as a challenge to the global order that upholds the integrity of states. In the light of this blatant disregard for international law, the global community must come together to reject Israel’s action. This is a moment for the international community to act with resolve and unity. The world must send a clear message to Israel: actions that destabilize nations, violate international law and disregard the principles of peace will not be tolerated. The recognition of Somaliland is a dangerous precedent that must be rejected and Israel must be held accountable for its actions that threaten regional and global stability. In addition, Israel must be reminded of its obligations under international law, particularly with regard to its continued occupation of Palestinian territories. The world must hold Israel accountable and demand that it honour the ceasefire agreement made with Palestinians.
