Islamabad, Pakistan weather: More widespread rain likely

More widespread rain is likely in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and most parts of Pakistan on Thursday night and Friday, with occasional breaks.

Heavy snowfall is also expected in the upper parts of the country during the period.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), a strong westerly wave prevails over most parts of Pakistan, which will likely persist in upper parts till tomorrow.

Under these conditions, more widespread intermittent rain is likely in the Twin Cities, upper/central Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan on Thursday night. Moderate to heavy rain/snow may also occur in upper parts. Rain is also likely at isolated places in south Punjab, Sindh and north/northeastern Balochistan.

On Friday, more rain is likely in the Twin Cities, upper Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, Moderate to heavy rain/snow may also occur in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northeastern Punjab and Kashmir. Cold and dry weather is likely in other parts of the country.

Heavy rain/snowfall may cause road closures/ slippery conditions in Naran, Kaghan, Dir, Swat, Kalam, Chitral, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Shangla, Astore, Hunza, Skardu, Murree, Galiyat, Neelum Valley, Bagh, Poonch, Haveli and Rawalakot.

Heavy rain/snowfall may cause flash flooding in local nullah/streams of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir, while there are possibilities of landslides/avalanches in hilly areas during the period.

Tourists are advised to remain extra cautious and avoid unnecessary travelling during the forecast period.

Islamabad’s minimum temperature will likely remain between 03°C and 05°C on Friday, between 04°C and 06°C on Saturday and between 03°C and 05°C on Sunday.

Rawalpindi’s minimum temperature will likely remain between 07°C and 09°C on Friday, between 08°C and 10°C on Saturday and between 07°C and 09°C on Sunday.

Meanwhile, scattered rain with snowfall over hills occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Punjab and Sindh. Weather remained cold and cloudy elsewhere in the country.

Leh remained the coldest place in the country, where the temperature dropped 11°C below the freezing point. Minimum temperature in Gupis, Skardu, Bagrote and Parachinar was recorded at -05°C, in Kalam at -04°C, and in Malam Jabba at -03°C.

In Islamabad, the minimum temperature was recorded at 04°C. Relative humidity in the evening was recorded at 45 per cent.

In Rawalpindi, the minimum temperature was recorded at 08°C. Relative humidity in the evening was recorded at 46 per cent.
