NEW YORK – Iran has called on the United Nations to hold the United States accountable for what it described as unlawful actions while Washington has announced a new round of sanctions targeting Iranian financial networks amid heightened tensions between the two countries.
Iran’s Ambassador to United Nations Amir Saeid Iravani accused the United States of violating international law and urged the UN to take decisive measures to ensure Washington is held responsible for its actions.
Speaking after an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council convened following recent military incidents between Iran and the United States in the Strait of Hormuz, Iravani said the US bears full legal and political responsibility for the consequences of what he termed its “illegal actions.”
He also called on the United Nations to adopt effective measures to prevent further acts of aggression and ensure that the United States fully complies with its international obligations.
Meanwhile, the US Department of the Treasury announced fresh sanctions targeting Iranian financial networks as part of its continued pressure campaign against Tehran.
Separately, a US news website reported that a new round of US-Iran negotiations is expected to take place next week, with Switzerland being considered as the likely venue for the talks.
However, Iran denied requesting a new phase of negotiations with the United States.
A spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry said Tehran had not sought fresh talks but had agreed to receive visits by international mediators.
