ISLAMABAD – Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference officially commenced today in Islamabad, bringing together parliamentary leaders from around the world under the theme “Peace, Security and Development.” The conference was inaugurated by Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif and Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, highlighting Pakistan’s commitment to dialogue, cooperation, and multilateral engagement.
In his opening address, Chairman Gilani emphasized that peace, security, and development are interconnected pillars of national and global progress. He welcomed delegates on behalf of Pakistan’s Parliament and citizens, expressing gratitude to the Prime Minister for attending as Chief Guest, and described the conference as a milestone in parliamentary diplomacy.
Chairman Gilani highlighted the contemporary global challenges, including conflicts in Gaza, Sudan, and Occupied Kashmir, and stressed the crucial role of parliaments in promoting dialogue, consensus, and cooperation. He called for an inclusive understanding of security encompassing economic resilience, climate action, environmental sustainability, food and water security, and cybersecurity.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s dedication to global peace under President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, he noted Pakistan’s role as a frontline state in counterterrorism and its contributions to UN peacekeeping missions. He also underscored Pakistan’s consistent pursuit of dialogue despite regional tensions.
Chairman Gilani urged delegates to focus on practical, actionable solutions, quoting Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto: “Leadership is about conviction, resilience, and the drive to advance ideas.” He wished all participants a productive and successful conference in Islamabad.
