At least four coal miners were killed and two others injured in a methane gas explosion at a mine in Balochistan’s Harnai district, officials said on Sunday.
Chief Mines Inspector Atif Ali said the incident occurred in the Shahrag area after methane gas built up inside the mine.
Rescue teams recovered the bodies of all four deceased workers and evacuated the two injured miners. The injured workers were initially taken to Harnai before being shifted to Quetta for medical treatment.
Two rescue workers who were trapped during the operation were also safely brought out of the mine, Ali said.
All four miners who died in the incident were residents of Dir district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to the chief mines inspector.
A similar tragedy occurred in July when 34 miners were killed after a coal mine collapsed in the Sorange area, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority. The mine owner had said the collapse was caused by a methane gas explosion.
Around 42 workers were inside the mine at the time, with those trapped reported to be residents of Shangla district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
