Government-Opposition dialogue

AT a time when political tensions were running high, the government’s decision to engage in talks with the Opposition is a welcome development. Amid speculation about possible measures, including the imposition of emergency or Governor’s Rule in the province, dialogue offers a far more constructive avenue for addressing the country’s political and security challenges.

The first round of talks between the government and the PTI held at the National Assembly Speaker’s Chamber, is therefore, significant. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan described the meeting as having taken place in a good atmosphere and said that both sides conveyed their respective positions. He added that the opposition presented its demands in a simple and clear manner and that the party had entered the talks without preconditions. There is little reason to expect an easy road ahead. Deep mistrust, political differences and contentious issues have accumulated over time and bridging these divides will require patience and, above all, flexibility from both sides. Yet negotiations must continue. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari very rightly stressed in a post on X handle that political issues must be settled through dialogue. Indeed, Pakistan cannot afford political instability when the country also faces the serious challenge of terrorism, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The PTI, too, needs to recognize that protests and long marches alone cannot resolve issues. Protest is a democratic right, but the exercise of that right should not come at the expense of the rights, safety and daily lives of others. Ultimately, even the most bitter issues have to return to the negotiating table if a durable solution is to be found. The government and opposition should, therefore, seize this opening and keep the dialogue going. The apparent willingness to engage is a welcome sign of political maturity. What the people now need from their political leadership is flexibility and a readiness to put national stability above partisan confrontation.
