Microsoft and Google are two of the world’s largest technology companies, both use more electricity than many countries.

A new study claims that during 2023, Google and Microsoft consumed 24 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity, which is more than 100 countries.

According to the research, Google and Microsoft consumed as much energy as Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan’s GDP is $78.7 billion, while Google’s annual revenue in 2023 was $307 billion, and Microsoft earned $211 billion in the same period.

This massive amount of energy consumption indicates how large these companies are.

Iceland, Ghana, and Tunisia each use 19 TWh of electricity annually, while Jordan uses 20 TWh.

Libya (25 TWh) and Slovakia (26 TWh) consume slightly more electricity.

The study indicates that comparing the electricity consumption of several countries and these two companies highlights the energy needs of large corporations.

The data centers of these companies contribute to environmental pollution, and the use of artificial intelligence technology is also increasing electricity consumption.

Both companies have promised to promote environmentally friendly energy by the end of this decade and are investing in this area.
