Global Summit in Spain sees Pakistan step up in Olive Industry

CORDOBA – Pakistan is stepping onto global olive stage as Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Mr. Rana Tanveer Hussain led South Asian nation’s delegation to the 122nd session of the International Olive Council (IOC) from 19–20 November 2025, signalling Islamabad’s ambitions in the rapidly growing olive industry.

Addressing the plenary session, Minister Hussain presented Pakistan’s official candidature for IOC membership, showcasing the immense potential of the country’s olive sector. His speech highlighted not only the scale of olive cultivation in Pakistan but also the promising future of the industry. The session warmly welcomed Pakistan’s interest, marking a major milestone in the country’s journey toward becoming a key player in the global olive market.

Minister took part in the grand celebrations of World Olive Day on 20 November 2025, reinforcing Pakistan’s commitment to the olive industry.

In high-profile meeting with IOC Executive Director Mr. Jaime Lillo López, the Minister discussed Pakistan’s candidature in detail. Mr. López assured Pakistan of full technical support to help grow the olive sector. Further boosting cooperation, the IOC’s Deputy Executive Director will visit Karachi later this month during the Food and Agriculture Exhibition to assess Pakistan’s needs and provide strategic support.

Hussain also met with Spain’s Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food, Mr. Luis Planas Puchades, to brief him on Pakistan’s olive industry developments and untapped potential. On the sidelines, he held strategic discussions with counterparts from Uzbekistan, Iran, Portugal, and Tunisia, exchanging insights to advance collaboration and development in the olive sector across nations.

The International Olive Council, headquartered in Madrid, is a leading intergovernmental organization in the olive oil and table olive industry. With 47 member countries, it serves as the world’s premier forum for policy discussion, industry innovation, and tackling challenges facing olive producers and consumers worldwide.

Pakistan’s active participation in this global platform signals a new era for the country’s olive industry, positioning it as a rising contender in the international olive market.
