THE resignation of Ali Amin Gandapur as Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has come as a surprise but it unmistakably points to deepening internal rifts within the PTI.
The announcement by PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja, confirming Gandapur’s removal and the nomination of Sohail Afridi, only reinforces the impression of growing discord and power struggles within the party’s top ranks.
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa is facing mounting challenges and the foremost amongst them is the threat of terrorism. The recent tragic incident in Orakzai Agency, where eleven security personnel, including a Lieutenant Colonel and a Major, embraced martyrdom during an exchange of fire, is a grim reminder of the worsening security situation in the province. At such a critical juncture, the province cannot afford political instability or administrative disarray. It needs leadership that is not only decisive but also collaborative, the one that prioritizes peace, governance and the well-being of its people over political point-scoring. Sohail Afridi, the PTI’s nominee for CM Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, brings a new face to the province’s leadership. His roots in the tribal areas offer hope that he may bring a fresh perspective and take the matters towards improvement. However, Afridi’s success will depend heavily on his approach to governance.
It is imperative that he steers clear of the politics of confrontation and instead seeks constructive engagement with both the federal government and the security agencies. Fight against terrorism cannot be won in isolation. Coordination, trust and unity of purpose among provincial and federal stakeholders are essential to restore peace and security in the province. The PTI leadership must also recognize that abrupt leadership changes and internal divisions only weaken their standing and effectiveness. The people of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, who have repeatedly placed their trust in PTI, deserve stability, clarity and a leadership that prioritizes their safety over factional interests. In the weeks ahead, all eyes will be on Sohail Afridi. The province needs a leader who can rise above party politics and address the urgent issues at hand from the menace of terrorism to the lack of basic services. Let this leadership transition not become another episode of political drama, but a turning point toward unity and peace in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
