DIAMER – The torrential flash floods triggered by heavy rains swept through several valleys of Diamer overnight, causing widespread destruction to infrastructure, homes, agricultural land, and public facilities, the local authorities said.
The police officials said that the floodwaters damaged a large number of houses, uprooted trees, destroyed standing crops, washed away pedestrian and vehicular bridges, and severely affected water channels and traditional watermills in the region.
The flooding also triggered landslides at multiple locations along the Karakoram Highway (KKH), disrupting traffic and hampering travel through the mountainous area.
The highway has remained closed since late Sunday night near the Gonar Farm Nursery in Chilas after a powerful flash flood inundated the route. The closure has resulted in long queues of vehicles on both sides of the highway, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded.
Reports from the affected area indicate that those stranded include women, children, and elderly travelers, many of whom have been facing considerable hardship due to the prolonged road closure. Passengers have urged the government and relevant authorities to restore traffic on the Karakoram Highway at the earliest to facilitate the movement of people and essential supplies.
Meanwhile, district authorities and emergency response teams have launched operations to assess the extent of the damage caused by the floods. Relevant departments are working to clear landslide debris, restore damaged roads, and repair bridges and other critical infrastructure to reopen the highway as soon as possible.
Officials said a detailed assessment of losses is underway, while restoration efforts continue across the affected areas.
