OVERSEAS Pakistanis continue to contribute to economic stability through their remittances.
As of the first quarter of fiscal year 2025-26, the country received a remarkable $9.536 billion in remittances, showing a healthy 8.41% increase compared to the same period last year. This growth is not just a reflection of the steady inflow of financial support, but a testament to the enduring connection between the Diaspora and their homeland.
In September alone, remittances rose by 11.33%, reaching $3.183 billion, compared to $2.859 billion in the same month last year. As Adviser to the Finance Minister, Khurram Shehzad, pointed out, Pakistan received a staggering $38.3 billion in remittances during the last fiscal year and the expectations are high that this figure will exceed $41 billion in the current fiscal year. These numbers are more than just figures on a balance sheet rather they are a crucial pillar of our foreign exchange reserves, helping to stabilize the economy in the face of challenges like trade deficits and foreign debt. However, it is crucial to recognize that while financial inflows are necessary, they are not enough to chart a path toward long-term economic stability. Pakistan must leverage its Diaspora to not only send money home but to also invest in the future of the country. This brings us to an important discussion: engaging the well-off Overseas Pakistanis to invest in the country’s growth and development. The government is focusing on bringing investments from key nations such as the United States, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries.
This is undoubtedly a positive step, but the potential for growth lies not only in attracting foreign investments but also in tapping into the vast pool of resources within the Overseas Pakistani community. Many Overseas Pakistanis, particularly those who have prospered in their adopted countries, have accumulated substantial wealth. These individuals are often deeply connected to Pakistan through family, cultural ties and a sense of patriotism. If given the right incentives and opportunities, they can become critical drivers of economic growth by making significant investments in Pakistan’s infrastructure, industries and startups. This can create jobs, foster entrepreneurship and provide much-needed capital to stimulate the domestic economy. To encourage this, it is essential that the government takes proactive steps to facilitate investments from Overseas Pakistanis. This includes streamlining the process for investment, providing tax breaks and incentives, ensuring transparency in regulatory frameworks and creating a conducive environment for businesses to flourish. Overseas Pakistanis should feel secure that their investments will be protected and that their contributions will have a direct, positive impact on the country’s economic trajectory.
