PAKISTAN has welcomed Kuwait’s ratification of Pakistan-Kuwait Defence Cooperation Agreement, signed in June 2023. The agreement provides a comprehensive framework for expanding defence cooperation between the two countries. It envisages collaboration in military training and education, joint exercises, the exchange of expertise, military manufacturing, electronic communication systems and scientific research. It also establishes institutional mechanisms to ensure its effective implementation.
The timing of the agreement is equally significant. Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah’s visit to Islamabad, coupled with the ratification of the defence pact, sends a clear message that Kuwait is keen to deepen its engagement with Pakistan across a range of sectors, particularly defence and security. Recent reports also indicated that Pakistan has been negotiating an expanded defence arrangement with Kuwait in exchange for greater energy cooperation and investment. If these discussions translate into concrete outcomes, they could broaden the relationship beyond the security domain and open new avenues for economic partnership. Pakistan has traditionally accorded high priority to its relations with the Gulf countries, bound by shared faith, deep people-to-people links and longstanding strategic cooperation. Pakistan’s consistent contribution to regional peace and its constructive diplomatic engagement have further enhanced its standing among its Gulf partners. This growing confidence is reflected in the expanding scope of cooperation with friendly countries such as Kuwait. The recent momentum in Pakistan-Gulf relations should, therefore, be sustained through regular engagement, economic collaboration and institutional partnerships. Pakistan-Kuwait Defence Cooperation Agreement is more than a security arrangement; it is a testament to mutual trust and shared interests. With continued commitment from both sides, the partnership promises to deliver lasting benefits not only for the two countries but also for wider regional peace and stability.
