CARACAS – Cuba and Venezuela confirmed the deaths of 55 military personnel during a US military operation carried out last week, the international media reported on Wednesday.
The Cuban government released the names of 32 military personnel killed in the US operation in Caracas.
According to the official details, 21 of the deceased were affiliated with Cuba’s Ministry of the Interior, including three senior officers while the remaining personnel were members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces.
Separately, the Venezuelan military announced that 23 of its service members were killed in the operation. The deceased included five admirals, 16 sergeants of various ranks and two other soldiers.
A statement issued by Venezuelan authorities said the personnel were killed during heavy gunfire and intense clashes.
A US newspaper, citing American officials, reported that the overall death toll could reach around 75, suggesting that casualties might be higher than the figures officially confirmed so far.
According to the report, the clashes occurred near President Nicolás Maduro’s compound in Caracas, where heavy fighting was reported.
The United States conducted the military operation in Venezuela on Saturday.
Following the operation, US President Donald Trump claimed that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were arrested from the presidential palace and transferred to the United States, where they are expected to face charges related to drug trafficking and terrorism.
