ISLAMABAD – The designation of Chief of Army Staff will be retitled to Chief of Defence Forces, and a new notification about the appointment of the Army chief will be issued ina major restructuring of armed forces.
Shehbez Sharif led Federal Cabinet approved sweeping amendments to the Pakistan Army, Air Force, and Navy Acts, reshaping the command structure of the country’s Armed Forces. The amendments, approved during a crucial Cabinet session at Parliament House, aim to bring all military laws in line with the Twenty-seventh Constitutional Amendment.
Under the new legislation, the post of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee will be abolished once the current chairman retires a historic decision set to redefine Pakistan’s military hierarchy.
The amendments also formally recognize the prestigious ranks of Field Marshal, Marshal of the Air Force, and Admiral of the Fleet, embedding them into law for the first time.
The Cabinet didn’t stop there, as it also cleared the draft of the Federal Constitutional Court (Procedure and Practice) Act, 2025, which lays the foundation for a powerful new judicial forum under the latest constitutional reforms.
Analysts are calling it “one of the most significant defence reforms in decades”, signaling a new era of civil-military legal alignment and institutional restructuring in Pakistan.
