Christians celebrate Easter

City Reporter

Like other parts of the globle, Christians celebrated Easter with religious fervour and zeal here on Sunday.
The day was observed with solemnity and prayers with special sermons on salvation. Various Churches organized special programmes like sunrise service, Easter Sunday sermons and choirs to mark the day.
In City, the main ceremony was held at Cathedral Church where sunrise service was held, sermon was delivered while special prayers were offered.
After sunrise service, Christians took a round of the Church while having lit candles in their hands. Special prayers were also offered for peace, prosperity and solidarity for the country.
The government made special security arrangements around all churches, including St Andrew’s Church, St Anthony’s Church and St Joseph’s Church etc.
Walk through gates were installed at all churches and city police announced high alert on the day.
Easter Sunday is the most well attended Sunday service of the year for Christian churches as the Christians hold prayers and special ceremonies to mark the Easter week.
It is pertinent to mention that the Friday before Easter Sunday- the Good Friday- is observed as a mourning day that Lord Jesus died on whereas Easter Sunday is celebrated because Jesus resurrected on this Sunday, Christians believe.
According to Christians, Jesus Christ rose from the dead on the third day after his crucifixion. His resurrection is celebrated on Easter Day, also called Resurrection Day.
Easter marks the end of Lent; a 40-day period of fasting and the last week of the Lent is called the Holy Week. Easter is followed by a 50-day period, called Eastertide or the Easter Season which ends with Pentecost Sunday.
