BEIJING – Chinese politicians from across the country flocked to Beijing to attend the country’s annual legislative meetings dubbed as ‘Two Sessions’ to discuss top priorities.

The key political event started on March 4 with the annual meeting of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), an advisory body of party delegates and scholars.

Key decisions are likely to be made as this is the first annual meeting since Beijing quashed its zero-Covid policy. The country’s top leaders including President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping attended the opening meeting of the first session which held at the Great Hall of the People.

On its maiden day, the chairman of the body emphasized its achievement of escalating international ties and defending rights facing external pressure.

Chinese media reported that the chairman of CPPCC National Committee Wang Yang delivered a work report for the Standing Committee. China-Africa Friendship Group and activities that allow foreign envoys and students to learn more about the CPPCC come under discussion.

The top political advisory defended Beijing’s sovereignty, security, and development interests in the face of Western attacks. US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan and other crucial issues come under discussion.

Officials mulled building patriotic forces in Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions, and encouraged body members from Hong Kong to push forward the implementation of the national security law for Hong Kong, Chinese media reported.
