ISLAMABAD – Australian captain Pat Cummins backed calls for former Pakistan captain Imran Khan to receive proper medical care and continued family access. His intervention makes him the first current international captain to publicly join the growing concerns over Khan’s health and treatment.
Cummins publicly thrown his weight behind former international captains raising concerns over Imran Khan’s health, prison conditions and access to medical care, giving the campaign a fresh international boost.
In a post on social media, Cummins joined former Australia captain Greg Chappell and other legendary skippers demanding that the court-ordered medical assessment of Khan be allowed to proceed fully. Australian captain also called for Khan’s family visits to continue and stressed that the former Pakistan captain should be treated with dignity.
The statement came shortly after Chappell raised concerns about Khan’s deteriorating condition during an appearance on The Grade Cricketer podcast.
Recalling his meeting with Khan in Pakistan around six years ago, Chappell said the former Pakistan captain had once appeared physically strong and robust but was now reportedly facing serious difficulties. He referred to an alleged problem affecting Khan’s right eye and also highlighted his prolonged period in isolation.
The controversy intensified after Court order directing that PTI chief to be shifted from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital for medical examination and treatment. Instead, the cricketer turned politician was taken to PIMS, where doctors from Shifa International Hospital were also involved in his examination.
The former international captains questioned whether the court-directed medical process was fully carried out. According to their appeal, Khan spent only a few hours at the hospital before being returned to jail. They are now demanding that the medical board ordered by the Supreme Court be permitted to complete a comprehensive assessment.
Khan’s family later knocked apex court’s door, calling for independent assessment of reports concerning the loss of vision in his right eye. Their demands extend beyond medical treatment. They are seeking uninterrupted weekly family visits and want authorities to immediately implement any treatment recommended by the medical board.
With Cummins now publicly supporting the appeal, the issue has gained another high-profile voice from the current international cricketing fraternity.
The campaign includes some of the biggest names in cricket history, among them Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Allan Border, Sunil Gavaskar, David Gower, Clive Lloyd, Arjuna Ranatunga, Steve Waugh and John Wright.
