The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued alerts for possible flash floods and urban flooding ahead of eighth spell of monsoon rains.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), rainfall is expected across several districts of the province from August 29 to September 5.
Intermittent rain is forecast for Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Jhelum, Chakwal, Talagang, Attock, Sialkot, Sheikhupura, Narowal and Gujrat.
Heavy rainfall is also likely in Lahore, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujranwala, Wazirabad, Hafizabad, Kasur, Okara, Nankana Sahib, Sargodha, Khushab, Mianwali, Noorpur Thal, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Layyah, Bhakkar, Sahiwal and Pakpattan.
The PDMA warned that urban flooding could occur in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Gujrat and Sialkot. Landslides are also possible in Murree, Galiyat and other mountainous areas.
PDMA Director General Saif Anwar Jappa said commissioners and deputy commissioners across Punjab had been directed to remain vigilant and ensure that all precautionary arrangements were completed beforehand.
Administrations of major cities have been asked to take measures to cope with urban flooding. Relevant departments have also been placed on alert, including health, irrigation, communication and construction, local government and livestock authorities.
Jappa urged residents to take necessary precautions during severe weather and avoid staying in weak or dilapidated buildings, which can become dangerous during heavy rains.
He advised citizens to remain indoors or move to secure locations during strong winds and storms and avoid unnecessary travel. People were also warned against going outdoors during thunderstorms because of the risk of lightning strikes.
Parents were urged to keep children away from accumulated water in low-lying areas as well as electric poles and exposed power lines.
The PDMA DG called on the public to follow instructions issued by district administrations and other relevant authorities throughout the monsoon season.
