ISLAMABAD – A political storm is raging in US as over 40 Democratic Members of Congress sent hard-hitting letter to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, demanding strong action and sanctions against Pakistan’s military leadership over what they call rapidly worsening human rights crisis.
The letter was spearheaded by Pramila Jayapal and Greg Casar, and includes signatures from 42 other lawmakers including prominent Muslim Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib.
In explosive allegations in the Letter, lawmkaer raised voice against severe collapse of human rights in Pakistan. Crackdown on free speech and dissent. Political suppression growing under military influenc, and ongoing intimidation of journalists and social media activists.
The letter stated “Under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government, the human rights crisis in Pakistan continues to worsen.”
It goes further: “The U.S. has a responsibility to hold Pakistan’s leadership accountable.”
The letter calls for Visa restrictions and Asset freezes against top officials. Lawmaekrs also called for the release of Imran Khan, who has been behind bars since August 2023.
