A timeless bond

THERE are a few bilateral relationships in the modern world that carry the depth, continuity and resilience as that between Pakistan and China.

Over the decades, the two countries have stood shoulder to shoulder, weathering global and regional changes with a bond often described using powerful lexemes like “iron brothers,” “all-weather friends,” and “strategic partners.” Yet, no combination of words can truly encapsulate the essence of this unique relationship — one built not just on diplomatic protocols, but on mutual respect, unshakable trust and shared visions for peace and prosperity.

This spirit was once again on full display during President Asif Ali Zardari’s recent meeting in Shanghai with Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Shanghai, Chen Jining. President Zardari reaffirmed what has always been the soul of Pakistan-China ties: that despite the efforts of spoilers and hostile elements, this relationship remains unshakeable. His words — that the friendship will continue to grow from generation to generation — reflect not just a political stance, but a deep-rooted public sentiment on both sides of the border. Chen Jining’s remarks were equally telling. He noted that “if you ask any Chinese about Pakistan, they will always say Pakistan is our all-weather friend and iron brother.” Such sentiments echo a profound truth — that the foundation of Pakistan-China friendship rests not just with leaders or governments, but in the hearts of the people. Of central importance remains the CPEC — a transformative project that has already laid the foundation for deep infrastructural and economic integration between the two nations. Since its launch, CPEC has been a testament to what shared vision and collaborative spirit can achieve. The second phase of CPEC, with its renewed focus on industrial cooperation, agriculture, science and technology and the upgradation of critical infrastructure such as the ML-1 railway project, offers immense promise. We are confident that the leadership of both countries with their proven commitment and shared long-term objectives will carry forward this second phase with the same vigour and determination that marked the first. This phase is not merely about building projects; it is about unlocking potential, uplifting people and securing a prosperous future.
