GLASGOW – Pakistan’s Fatima Zahra created history by winning a bronze medal in the women’s 60kg boxing event at the Commonwealth Games, becoming the first Pakistani woman to claim a boxing medal in the history of the competition.
Zahra secured the bronze after reaching the semifinals, where she was defeated by a Canadian boxer.
The Canadian held a 4-1 advantage after the opening round before the referee stopped the contest in the second round.
Despite the semifinal defeat, Zahra finished the event with a bronze medal, marking a significant milestone for Pakistan’s boxing.
The achievement also ends Pakistan’s medal drought in Commonwealth Games boxing, with the country winning its first boxing medal at the event since 2014.
Earlier in the tournament, Zahra booked her place in the semifinals by defeating New Zealand’s Jordan Wilson in the quarterfinals of the women’s 60kg category.
Meanwhile, Arshad Nadeem finished outside the medal positions in the men’s javelin throw final at the Commonwealth Games, ending his title defence with a ninth-place finish.
Competing in a 12-athlete field, Nadeem was unable to produce his best performance during the final. His opening attempt was ruled a foul, while his second throw measured 77.41 metres. He managed 75.39 metres with his third attempt, leaving him ninth in the final standings and out of medal contention.
Sri Lanka’s Romesh Tharanga captured the gold medal with a best throw of 89.75 metres, the top mark of the competition.
India secured the remaining podium places, with Neeraj Chopra winning the silver medal after recording a best throw of 85.83 metres. Fellow Indian athlete Yash Veer Singh claimed the bronze medal.
Nadeem entered the competition as the defending Commonwealth Games champion and was aiming to retain the title he had previously won. However, he was unable to replicate that success in Glasgow.
The Pakistani athlete had qualified for the final by finishing seventh in the qualifying round. His best throw of 78.63 metres was enough to earn him a place among the 12 finalists in the men’s javelin event.
Despite reaching the final, Nadeem could not improve on his qualifying-round performance and concluded the competition without a medal.
