In 2024, Karachi residents have paid a staggering Rs 850 million in traffic fines, as reported by the traffic police. A total of 11.57 lakh challans were issued for various traffic violations throughout the year.
The majority of the fines were for violations related to vehicle number plates, with 2.21 lakh challans and fines totaling Rs 11.93 crore. Signal violations accounted for 1.96 lakh challans, amounting to Rs 12.49 crore in fines. Other common violations included overloading (2 lakh challans, Rs 10.31 crore in fines), no parking (1.30 lakh challans, Rs 11.57 crore), and one-way or wrong-way driving (91,000 challans, Rs 2.02 crore).
Motorcyclists contributed to the total with 84,000 fines for not wearing helmets, resulting in Rs 4.24 crore in penalties. Additionally, Rs 5.31 crore was collected for fancy number plates, Rs 3.75 crore for obstructing traffic, and Rs 1.07 crore for vehicles lacking speedometers.
