ISLAMABAD – The Directorate General Immigration & Passports has introduced e-Passport in what is dubbed as the biggest up-gradation of Pakistani travel documents since 2004.
Pakistan citizens can apply for the issuance of e-passport from all field offices across the country as the facility is available at all these location from August 16, 2023.
As compared to Machine Readable Passport, the e-Passport is considered a highly secure travel document. It is equipped with an electronic chip which is embedded in one of the passport pages. It contains details such passport holder’s identity, personal data and biometrics, digital signature and a unique identification number.
An e-passport has a contactless (NFC) chip on it which means that those passports can be read electronically. The newly launched e-Passports in Pakistan meet the United Nations’ ICAO standards, making it secure.

More than 150 countries across the country are already using the e-passports. Several countries have completely switched to the e-Passport due to the increasing need for efficient and better border security.
Pakistan e-Passport holders can benefit from the e-gate facility at all airports around the world.
