IG Sindh, Ghulam Nabi Memon, announced a six-month ban on the transfers and appointments of traffic section officers and record keepers. This directive was issued during a ceremony held at the Scout Auditorium near the Sindh Secretariat, focusing on traffic management and related issues. Speaking at the event, IG Sindh praised the dedication of traffic police officers and staff who have continued their duties diligently despite the severe heatwave. “I salute the traffic police for their exceptional service during these challenging conditions,” he said. IG Sindh emphasized that any complaints against traffic section officers (SOs) and record keepers would be addressed by the SP and DSP.

He instructed the Additional IG Karachi to grant permission for transfers and appointments based solely on the recommendations of SPs and DSPs. Since June 2023, 255 traffic SOs and 244 record keepers have been transferred or appointed. IG Sindh highlighted that frequent and unjustified transfers impact traffic and administrative operations adversely. He also clarified that only traffic officers are authorized to issue fines, while SOs have the authority to issue tickets for violations like over speeding and running red lights. Constables are not permitted to issue fines.

IG Sindh mandated the use of body-worn cameras by all officers involved in issuing fines to ensure their protection and proper documentation of the ticketing process. He also outlined that during traffic enforcement campaigns, SPs and DSPs will be present on-site and lead the efforts. IG Sindh announced that in response to complaints, actions would also be taken against the SPs and DSPs if necessary. He acknowledged that the entire police department often faces criticism due to the actions of a few individuals.

To support police personnel, a health insurance policy providing coverage up to Rs 1 million is being introduced. Additionally, direct budget allocations to police stations are being made to ensure financial autonomy. A committee will be formed to propose new police stations and repairs for existing ones, including suggestions for mobile toilets and additional traffic vehicles.
