Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah addressed the provincial assembly regarding the recent incident at the Sukkur Barrage. He mentioned the efforts being made by the Sindh government and praised the hard work of the irrigation department and laborers involved in the restoration. CM Shah stated that the irrigation minister had provided a detailed update on the situation in the assembly yesterday. He mentioned that a temporary pond required for downstream completion was expected to take four days but was successfully finished by dawn today, with all details reaching his office.
The Chief Minister highlighted the historic context, noting that a similar incident occurred in December 1982. He explained that the door replacement project at the barrage had been ongoing for a few years due to its complexity and was being executed by a Chinese company. The project was expected to take an additional 48 hours but was completed 72 hours ahead of schedule.
As the pond fills, water is being supplied to the left side of the Rohri, Khairpur East, Khairpur West, and Nara canals. The new gate for the Sukkur Barrage is expected to arrive from Karachi Shipyard by July 20. CM Shah assured that they are considering alternative options due to the increased water flow in the Indus River during June and July. Expressing his gratitude, CM Shah lauded the efforts of the irrigation minister and the workers and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the people of Sindh, acknowledging the province’s consistent support for the Pakistan Peoples Party since 1970. He emphasized that the government remains accountable to the people and stands by them in every challenging moment.
