Social media users across the world are expressing grief over death of Kabosu, the famous Shiba Inu dog behind the doge meme breathed her last at the age of 14 years.

The announcement was made by Kabosu’s owner who thanked everyone for their love as the dog inspired a generation of online memes. Amid the global fame, Dogecoin cryptocurrency was launched with his picture.

The aging dog died after suffering from leukemia and liver ailment, her owner Atsuko Sato said on social media. “Kabosu is at Rest now”, the post said.

Kabosu was adopted by Sato in 2008 from an animal shelter, and it became internet sensation couple of years later as a picture of a cute canine went viral, showing her with crossed paws and a slight smirk.

The dog also became the face of the cryptocurrency Dogecoin, which started as a joke currency and is now associated with Watford Football Club. The meme was sold as a non-fungible token (NFT) in 2021 for $4 million

The cryptocurrency was created in 2013 by software engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer as a joke, without intention that it became so famous.

It was meant to poke fun at the hype surrounding cryptocurrencies at time. Despite its humorous origins, Dogecoin has gained a following and is sometimes seen as a legitimate investment opportunity. The cryptocurrency features the Shiba Inu dog from the popular “doge” meme as its logo and namesake.

Dogecoin quickly developed a community online and at one point reached a market capitalization of over $85 billion.

Its price experienced fluctuations, with a peak in early 2018 and another spike in 2020 following a TikTok trend. In 2021, Dogecoin made headlines when world riches man Elon Musk backed the cryptocurrency.
