Students categorised under Pahari community held a protest demonstration in front of Government Postgraduate College Rajouri against discriminatory treatment in terms of disbursement of scholarship.

The students blocked main road Kheora to Chowdhary Nar at college gate raising slogans for immediate dispersal of scholarship.

The protesting students said that Pahari students are waiting for scholarship even in the month of August when students from other categorised sections have received scholarship in the month of June-July itself.

They said that delay in disbursement of scholarship for Pahari students is badly hampering their routine study work as many students bear their education expenses out of this scholarship. Due to protest by the college students the main road got closed for the movement of all kinds of vehicles.

Deputy SP Headquarter Rajouri Mudassir Hussain and Station House Officer Rajouri Aejaz Ahmed Wani than reached at the spot and pacified the protesters assuring the students that their genuine demand will be taken up with the concerned authority. On this assurance protest was called off by the students.

People continued massive protests in Jammu region against the extortion in occupied Jammu and Kashmir by the Narendra Modi-led Indian government.

The protests were held in Jammu, Samba, Hiranagar, Kathua, Udhampur, Rajouri, Ramban and other towns by the activists of the Yuva Rajput Sabha (YRS) and supported by members of various other social and political organizations. They were demanding closure of Sarore Toll Plaza on the Jammu-Pathankot highway and release of peaceful protesters.

Indian police resorted to teargas shelling and lathi-charge at several places to disperse the protesters, triggering clashes between the demonstrators and the police personnel. The police also arrested dozens of more protesters. The police have arrested dozens of people during demonstrations since Monday.

The protestors shouted slogans in support of their demands of releasing the arrested persons and suspension of Sarore Toll Plaza.

Earlier, the occupation authorities had imposed Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in and around the Sarore Toll Plaza to prevent gathering of four or more people after the YRS activists started their protest on Monday.

On the other hands, Samba town observed a half day shutdown in support of the demands.—KMS
