The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) on Saturday took a momentous step towards strengthening values and principles that form the bedrock of Pakistan’s identity by unveiling a “code of conduct” aimed at ensuring peace and inter-sect harmony especially during holy month of Muharram. Sharing its main points at a news conference in Islamabad, Chairman Council of Islamic Ideology Qibla Ayaz said no individual should indulge in sectarian hatred, armed sectarian conflict or forcefully imposing his ideology on others saying this is contrary to the spirit of Shariat and it is Fassad Fil Ard.  The code of conduct recognises the right of all schools of thought of Islam to preach their beliefs but stressed that nobody is allowed to spread hatred or hurl baseless allegations against any sect, individual or institution.

The code is very comprehensive in nature and the most important aspect is that it has been prepared with consensus by scholars of all schools of thought, thus giving the message of unity and tolerance.  It revolves around upholding dignity and respect of fundamental rights on which our great religion lays great emphasis on. Undoubtedly, religious scholars have a vital role in guiding the community and providing insight into Islamic teachings. In this backdrop, we appreciate efforts of religious scholars for coming up with this document. Unfortunately, there have been instances where some individuals misinterpret and misuse teachings of Islam, leading to violent acts and divisive rhetoric.  Hence it is incumbent upon each one of us to educate ourselves about true essence of our faith. If we inculcate true spirit of Islam, we would not require guidelines to remind us of our responsibilities towards society and the state. As we observe the month of Muharram with due reverence, let us reflect on true teachings of Islam and endeavour to spend our lives in a manner that exemplifies the values of compassion, tolerance and love that lie at the heart of our faith. Only then can we truly honour the spirit of Muharram and Islam as a whole.
