OSCE/ODIHR representatives informed about pre-election situation of Azerbaijan

Head of the election headquarters of the Association for Civil Society Development in Azerbaijan (AVCIYA) Muharram Zulfugarli met with the representatives of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR). At the meeting, election analyst Masha Yanushevich briefly informed about the work done by the organization in connection with parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan.
The representative of AVCIYA imformed the OSCE representatives on works done in connection with the monitoring of elections held in Azerbaijan since 2004, as well as with the work related to elections to Azerbaijan’s parliament which will be held on February 9.
At the meeting, an exchange of views was held on the work of the country’s Central Election Commission (CEC), the pre-election atmosphere, voter complaints, the campaign for collecting signatures by candidates, reports prepared by both structures, etc. Participants praised the work of the CEC in the field of handling complaints of candidates.
In conclusion, the two structures made a settlement on continuing the exchange of experience and organizing a meeting of AVCIYA representatives with 350 observers.
Head of PACE observation mission appointed:
Head of Observation Mission to be sent to monitor early parliamentary elections scheduled on February 9 in Azerbaijan has been appointed at a bureau meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
Frank Schwabe has been appointed as a head the observation mission, secki-2020.az reports. The observation mission representing all 5 political groups represented in PACE is expected to arrive in Azerbaijan to observe the parliamentary elections during February 6-10.
Istribution of notifications to voters ends tomorrow
The deadline for distributing notifications about the date, time and venue (address of the polling station) of the February 9 parliamentary elections ends tomorrow. According to secki-2020.az, it was noted in the Calendar Plan for basic activities and measures on the preparation and conduct of elections to the Azerbaijani Parliament.
According to the Action Plan, by February 2, Precinct Elections Commissions should distribute notifications to voters on the date, time and venue of the elections (address of the polling station).
Mustafa Babanli: “Azerbaijan’s democratic development has paved a way for transparent and fair elections”, Rector of Azerbaijan State University of Oil and Industry, Professor Mustafa Babanli told secki-2020.az.
He said: “The preparations for the February 9 parliamentary elections continues at a high level. The election process is conducted in accordance with the legislation.”
Rector noted that the sheer number of registered candidates and the high number of young people among them indicate that the electoral environment is democratic. “Today, there is a fully democratic and transparent environment in Azerbaijan. We have always seen that the Azerbaijani people were very active in the elections. I am confident that the Azerbaijani society would actively participate in the upcoming elections, too”, Mustafa Babanli stressed.
