Spencer Eye Hospital implants donated cornea tissue in blind people

Three more corneas were transplanted in the eyes of blind people in KMC’s Spencer Eye Hospital under the cooperation of the Lions Club International. So far 17 people have got this facility in SHE since the time cornea transplantation was restored after a gap of fifteen years under the patronage of the mayor Karachi. Earlier the Mayor Karachi received the donation of three corneas from LCP’s former Chairman Lion Abu Bakar Kareem, and extended gratitude for his generous contribution to help restore eye sights of poor patients.
The corneas have been imported from Sri Lanka. The delegation comprised former chairman Lions Club Arshad Islam and members Muhammad Imran and Abdul Qadir who met the mayor in his office whereas the deputy mayor Syed Arshad Hasan, chairperson medical and health committee Naheed Fatima, senior director medical and health department Dr. Salma Kausar and medical superintendent of the Spencer Eye Hospital Dr. Beerbal Genani were also present on this occasion. Mayor Karachi said that medical facilities provided by KMC were being improved with the support of private sector organizations and individuals.
KMC can serve the citizens in an even better way with the cooperation and support of such people and organizations. He said to city well offs to help KMC hospitals maintain the building and machinery used in these hospitals. This would be a big service to the city. He said that the patient’s selection for cornea transplantation has been purely on merit and without any discrimination of caste or creed and religion.
Laser surgery for cataract with yaag laser and ultrasound machine is now available in the Spencer Hospital to ensure better performance. This may be noted that LCP has so far gifted 14 corneas (imported from Sri Lanka), this year. All tissues have been transplanted among blinds hailing from different parts of the country.
