Apple has announced the iPhone 13, which can shoot movies in “portrait mode” with a depth of field effect.

According to Apple, the new cinematic mode “anticipates when someone is about to enter the frame” and shifts emphasis to them, a technique known as “pull focus.”

According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, it is the only smartphone that allows users to modify this effect after shooting.

The majority of the other innovations on the new model, on the other hand, were incremental improvements over prior models.

News of a new security vulnerability in Apple products, which may expose users’ communications, overshadowed the event.

On Monday, Apple issued a security fix for a previously discovered flaw that may allow attackers to get access to Apple’s iMessage service without the user clicking on a malicious link or file.

New features

The new iPhone has a faster A15 processor, a brighter display, and up to 2.5 hours of battery life. It also comes in new colors including pink, blue, midnight, starlight, and red.

The next iPhone will offer up to 500GB of storage, with the lowest storage option increasing to 128GB from 64GB on previous generations.

Apple was also eager to emphasize the phone’s commitment to the environment, claiming that it was made up of numerous recycled components, including antenna lines fashioned from plastic water bottles.

The introduction comes at a time when consumers are holding their phones for extended periods of time before upgrading. Around 250 million iPhone customers, according to investment company Wedbush Securities, have not updated their phones in 3.5 years.

Many people have yet to encounter contemporary features, according to Paolo Pescatore, an analyst at PP Foresight.

“While many will see some upgrades as incremental, there are millions of users who have yet to upgrade to 5G. Therefore, this so-called ‘supercycle’ moment is still relevant,” he said.

Only the iPhone 12, which was launched last year, and the newly revealed versions have a 5G connection.

According to research company IDC, Apple delivered 25.9% of all 5G smartphones worldwide in the second quarter of this year.

Marta Pinto, senior research manager at IDC, said: “With the new portfolio, this number will grow and consolidate the dominance of Apple in that space.”

“Not being the first [to launch a 5G phone] paid off.”

The iPhone 13 Mini, Pro, and Pro Max were also released by Apple.

The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max have three cameras and “Apple’s most advanced camera system yet,” according to Apple.

A Super Retina XDR display and ProMotion – which offers adaptive refresh rates of up to 120Hz – are included in the premium versions.

This makes scrolling, animations, and gaming more fluid.
