What Changes Have Been Made To Pakistans Army Act Historic Reforms Explained

ISLAMABAD – Pakistani government approved sweeping changes to Pakistan Army Act, reshaping the country’s military command structure and redefining the tenure of its top brass, as the country is witnessing unprecedented security challenges.

The key amendments not only confer Field Marshal Asim Munir with an additional, powerful position as Chief of Defense Forces (CDF) but also overhaul the structure of Pakistan’s armed forces for the modern era.

Field Marshal Asim Munir will now command the Army, Air Force, and Navy as the Chief of Defense Forces, marking a first in Pakistan’s military history.

New Strategic Command Introduced

Adding to the drama, the government introduced a new, highly strategic post, Commander of National Strategic Command. This new position will oversee country’s national strategic assets, and the Prime Minister will appoint a Pakistan Army General to this post for three years based on the Field Marshal’s recommendation.

Even more striking, the tenure can be extended by another three years in the national interest without judicial review, and conventional retirement rules will not apply.

Extended Tenure for Current Military Chiefs

Chief of Army Staff will now officially be named as Chief of Defense Forces. According to the amendments, tenure will reset from the date of this new notification, effectively extending the time Field Marshal Asim Munir will lead the military beyond his previously approved 2027 term, probably till 2030.

Last year, Parliament had increased the tenure of armed forces chiefs from three to five years; this latest amendment ensures Asim Munir’s command continues longer, solidifying his control over Pakistan’s defense apparatus.

The federal government will now have authority to define the responsibilities of the Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defense Forces, including full reorganization of the armed forces and multi-domain operational integration, underscoring Pakistan’s focus on modern warfare readiness.

Rumours about Vice and Deputy Chief of Army Staff

It was reported about introduction of Vice or Deputy Chief of Army Staff, a position previously in use, granting powers equivalent to the Army Chief, at discretion of the Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defense Forces.

Officials later clarified that no such posts are being introduced, while a fabircated notification also surfaced online.

‘No Provision for VCOAS or DCOAS in Army Act’

These structural reforms of Pakistan’s military are historic, giving Field Marshal Asim Munir authority across all branches of the armed forces and securing his tenure for years to come.

After these changes, the South Asian nation now enters a new era of centralized military command, strategic consolidation, and multi-domain defense integration, setting the stage for a bold redefinition of its armed forces in line with modern global warfare standards.
