TASHKENT — Uzbekistan strongly condemned an attempted drone attack directed towards the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia, expressing full solidarity with the Kingdom and stressing that holy sites, civilians, and civilian infrastructure must not be placed at risk.
Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said any action that threatens the safety of religious sites or civilians is unacceptable. “We express our full solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” the ministry said, while calling on all sides to exercise maximum restraint and avoid further escalation.
Uzbekistan also urged strict adherence to international law and called for respect for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of states.
The statement comes amid growing tensions and a wider escalation of conflict in the region, with increasing concerns over attacks involving drones and missiles and their potential impact on civilians and critical infrastructure.
For Uzbekistan, the attempted attack carries particular significance because of Mecca’s status as Islam’s holiest city and a destination for millions of Muslims from around the world.
Uzbek Foreign Ministry said efforts should focus on reducing tensions, preventing the conflict from spreading and creating conditions for lasting peace and stability in the region. “Uzbekistan supports efforts aimed at reducing tensions, preventing further spread of the conflict, and ensuring peace, security and stability in the region,” the ministry said.
Uzbekistan and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) condemned the reported attacks involving drones near Makkah and the Madinah region, expressing solidarity with Saudi Arabia.
Uzbekistan called threat to holy sites, civilians and civilian infrastructure unacceptable, urging all sides to exercise restraint, follow international law and respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.
OIC similarly condemned the attacks, stressing the importance of protecting Islam’s holy sites and civilian populations. It expressed support for Saudi Arabia’s efforts to safeguard Makkah, Madinah, Muslims, and the Kingdom’s security and sovereignty, while calling for measures to prevent further attacks and escalation.
