UN beyond resolutions

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has appreciated Pakistan’s mediatory role in facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran, particularly its efforts to create conditions for negotiations and de-escalation. His remarks are recognition of Pakistan’s continued contribution to peace and stability in the region.

The fact of the matter is that Pakistan has consistently advocated the peaceful resolution of conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy. Its efforts in the current situation are a reflection of this long-standing policy. Pakistan has also consistently called for the peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions. However, India has repeatedly refused to reciprocate such efforts and has maintained an uncompromising position on the dispute. Jammu and Kashmir has remained on the UN agenda for decades, but the Kashmiri people are still awaiting the exercise of their right to self-determination promised under the relevant UN framework. Pakistan continues to raise concerns over human rights violations and restrictions in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan has similarly maintained a consistent position on Palestine, calling for an immediate end to the suffering of Palestinians and supporting a just and lasting solution based on the establishment of an independent, sovereign and viable Palestinian state, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital. Islamabad has also supported international efforts aimed at achieving a two-state solution. The long-standing Kashmir dispute, like the unresolved Palestinian question, raises a fundamental question about the effectiveness of the international system. The United Nations has adopted numerous resolutions concerning disputes and conflicts, but their credibility ultimately depends upon implementation. The international community, therefore, needs to ensure that UN resolutions do not remain confined to diplomatic records but are translated into meaningful action. The UN must be strengthened as an institution capable of effectively implementing its decisions and upholding the principles of international law. Diplomacy remains the most viable path towards resolving conflicts and securing lasting peace.
