WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump has announced what he described as a new agreement involving the United States, Denmark and Greenland, claiming that Washington will gain broad and lasting control over Greenland’s security and other essential security needs.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump said the agreement would give the United States full freedom to take measures it considers necessary to protect and defend Greenland as well as US security interests. He also claimed that the agreement would not require the United States to bear any costs.
Trump said the arrangement would prevent any adversarial country from establishing a military base, maintaining a military presence or making sensitive investments in Greenland without the explicit written approval of the United States.
According to Trump, the United States would immediately begin establishing a significant military presence in suitable areas of Greenland. He said Washington would work with the people of Greenland as part of the process.
Trump also said that previous US presidents had recognized Greenland’s strategic importance but had failed to resolve the issue permanently. He described the agreement as significant for the United States, Denmark, Greenland and their allies.
However, according to a foreign news agency, the announcement by Trump had not been immediately followed by a public confirmation of the agreement’s details from the governments of Denmark or Greenland.
The reported agreement, as described by Trump, would represent a significant development in the US approach to Greenland’s strategic and security role.
