ISLAMABAD – The Islamic month of Rajab commences in Pakistan today (December 22) with Muslims across the country gearing up to observe the holy night of “Shab-e-Meraj” in January 2026.
On Sunday night, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee of Pakistan has officially declared that the crescent moon of Rajab has been sighted.
According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the meeting of the committee was held under the chairmanship of Maulana Muhammad Abdul Khabeer Azad. Zonal and district-level committees also held their respective meetings in various locations across the country.
Following the meeting, the chairman of the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee announced that the moon of Rajab has been sighted, marking the beginning of the month. He announced that the 1st of Rajab will be observed on December 22, 2025.
Shab-e-Meraj 2025 Date in Pakistan
The holy event is observed on 27th night of Islamic month of Rajab. The night recalls the mystical journey of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) who traveled from the Kaaba to Masjid al-Aqsa where he led prayers. The Messenger then ascended to the heavens on the heavenly animal named ‘al-Buraq’ where he met Almighty and received instructions.
Every year, followers remember the blessed night with great significance as many offer special prayers, reciting the Quran, while others observe fasting.
As per the announcement, the night of Meraj or Shab-e-Meraj will be observed on the 27th of Rajab, which will fall on January 16, 2026, in Pakistan.
Shab-e-Meraj 2026 Holiday
The federal government of Pakistan traditionally does not declare a public holiday for Shab-e-Meraj.
However, the Sindh government is expected to announce a public holiday as it had declared one on Shab-e-Meraj 2025 in previous Islamic year.
