The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) launched a dedicated Shariah-compliant trading counter on Thursday following approval of the Shariah Trading Counter Regulations by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).
The platform enables retail and institutional investors to trade eligible shares, Government Ijarah Sukuk and corporate Sukuk in accordance with Islamic financial principles.
PSX said 39 brokers had joined the initiative through Islamic trading windows, while two brokerage houses were licensed as fully Shariah-compliant brokers. The counter prohibits non-compliant securities, short selling, derivatives and interest-based financing, offering Murabaha Share Financing as an alternative.
A dedicated Shariah Portal has also been introduced to help investors identify eligible stocks and Sukuk and open accounts using Shariah-compliant documentation.
PSX CEO Farrukh H. Sabzwari said the initiative would improve access to Islamic investment opportunities and strengthen investor confidence. SECP officials said it would broaden market participation, while plans include expanding digital retail Sukuk and developing Shariah-compliant liquidity and risk-management tools.
