Pm Shehbaz Likely To Join High Stakes Us Iran Talks In Buergenstock

ISLAMABAD – Buergenstock remained in global headliens due to major diplomatic gathering as key American and Iranian officials converge on Switzerland for technical negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif may participate in discussions under framework of a memorandum of understanding, with reports suggesting he could depart for Zurich later tonight.

The developments have fueled speculation about intensified diplomatic efforts amid growing regional and international challenges.

On the American side, special envoy Steve Witkoff and former senior adviser Jared Kushner are reportedly already in Switzerland, while U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance is expected to arrive today, underscoring the importance Washington is placing on the engagement.

Iran sent high-level delegation led by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. According to Iranian media reports, the team includes Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, National Security Council official Ali Bagheri, Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati, Kazem Gharibabadi, and Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei.

The simultaneous arrival of senior political, diplomatic, and economic figures from both sides has transformed Switzerland into a hub of intense diplomatic activity, with observers closely watching for any breakthrough signals.

PM Sharif’s presence would add another dimension to an already closely watched diplomatic gathering, highlighting Pakistan’s potential role in a rapidly evolving regional and international landscape.

Earlier today, Foreign Office confirmed that technical-level talks between the United States and Iran will take place in Buergenstock, Switzerland, on Sunday as part of the follow-up process to the recently signed Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

US Vice President JD Vance said talks with Iran are progressing positively and announced plans to travel to Switzerland soon. Meanwhile, Iran has also confirmed its participation, stressing the importance of full implementation of all commitments under the agreement.

The 14-point accord, signed on Thursday by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif serving as mediator, established a framework to end more than 100 days of conflict, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and launch further negotiations over the next 60 days.
