ISLAMABAD – Pakistan is once again finding itself at the centre of a major geopolitical development. Against the backdrop of the newly agreed 60-day roadmap between US and Iran, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is expected to visit Islamabad on Tuesday as Pakistan remained in global headlines amid growing role in facilitating dialogue at critical moment for regional stability.
The vist comes at the heels of a new negotiation process between Tehran and Washington to end months of tensions and reaching a comprehensive agreement within 60 days.
The visit is likely to take place a day after Pakistan and Qatar announced encouraging progress in US-Iran talks held in Bürgenstock, Switzerland. The negotiations resulted in a jointly mediated 60-day roadmap and the establishment of new mechanisms intended to reduce regional tensions, prevent military escalation and protect commercial shipping through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
Switzerland talks are the first high-level engagement under Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, a Pakistan-brokered accord signed last week following months of conflict triggered by joint US-Israeli attacks on Iran in February. The agreement launched a diplomatic framework designed to address key disputes, including Iran’s nuclear programme, economic sanctions and broader regional security concerns.
Islamabad and Doha termed the discussions as productive and announced that negotiators had agreed on a roadmap aimed at securing a final settlement within two months. The statement said the agreement would allow immediate technical-level negotiations to begin.
A High-Level Committee has been established to oversee the mediation process and provide political guidance. At the same time, chief negotiators will lead specialised working groups focusing on nuclear issues, sanctions, monitoring mechanisms and dispute-resolution procedures.
Both sides agreed to establish a dedicated communication channel designed to prevent misunderstandings and accidental escalation. The mechanism will support efforts to ensure the safe movement of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy transit routes.
Another major outcome of the talks was the decision to create a de-confliction cell involving Lebanon. Facilitated by Pakistan and Qatar, the mechanism will help implement commitments related to the cessation of military operations in Lebanon and reduce the risk of renewed hostilities.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei confirmed that Iran, the US and mediators finalized executive mechanisms for implementing the agreement and said expert-level and technical negotiations would continue in the coming days.
Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding also calls for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, an end to hostilities and sustained negotiations aimed at achieving a broader political settlement between Tehran and Washington.
