ISLAMABAD – Weekly inflation in Pakistan edged up by 0.28%, with prices of 20 essential commodities increasing during the week, the data released by Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) revealed on Friday.
The latest figures showed that prices of nine items declined, while the prices of 22 essential commodities remained unchanged during the week.
The figures indicate that while some essential items became cheaper, the increase in prices of a larger number of commodities pushed overall weekly inflation higher during the reported period.
Among the commodities that recorded notable increases, onion prices rose by 10.1%, while chicken became 9.19% more expensive.
The prices of gram pulse also increased by 2.4%, while ghee, flour and several other essential food items recorded price hikes during the week.
On the other hand, consumers received some relief as tomato prices fell by 6.82%.
Prices of several other commodities, including liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), sugar, eggs and potatoes, also declined during the week, according to the PBS data.
The latest increase comes amid continued fluctuations in the prices of essential food and household items across the country. The weekly inflation indicator tracks changes in the prices of a basket of essential commodities consumed by households.
The data highlighted continued price pressures on consumers, particularly from food items such as onions and chicken, despite declines in the prices of some other necessities.
The authorities regularly monitor weekly price movements to assess inflationary trends and identify commodities experiencing significant price increases.
