Pak-Turkiye energy vision

THE signing of five petroleum concession agreements between the Turkish Petroleum Overseas Company (TPOC) and Pakistan marks a pivotal moment in the country’s energy sector.

With an investment of $300 million, these agreements not only signal TPOC’s formal entry into Pakistan’s oil and gas exploration industry, but also reflect a growing partnership between the two countries in the energy sphere. As the global energy landscape evolves, such strategic collaborations are essential for countries like Pakistan, which are striving for greater energy security and self-reliance.

The agreements, which include both offshore and onshore exploration blocks, open up exciting prospects for the exploration of our vast and largely untapped oil and gas resources. This could well be a game-changer, providing Pakistan with the necessary expertise, technology and capital to unlock its natural resources and reduce its dependency on imported energy. Oil and gas exploration activities are expected to gain significant momentum as a result of this collaboration. With decades of experience in the energy sector, Turkish companies are well-positioned to offer innovative solutions and a proven track record in delivering quality outcomes. Equally significant is the recent development in the power sector, where Pakistan is looking to privatize Discos. The first three distribution companies IESCO, FESCO and GESCO are poised to be offered to private investors, with Turkish companies particularly being encouraged to participate. There is little doubt that Turkish companies, known for their technical expertise and commitment to quality, will bring much-needed improvement to energy distribution infrastructure. With their experience in modernizing power systems and boosting operational efficiencies, Turkish investors could be the perfect fit for these Discos. The privatization of these companies presents an opportunity for Pakistan to overhaul its energy distribution networks, reduce transmission losses, improve customer service and ensure a more reliable supply of electricity for consumers. The commitment of both nations to deepen cooperation in oil and gas, energy infrastructure and mining is a welcome and necessary step. Both countries have much to gain from this expanding partnership. Engagement at all levels should continue to explore new areas of cooperation, ensuring that both nations derive maximum benefit from their shared goals of energy security, economic development and sustainable growth.
