ISLAMABAD – State Minister for Law and Justice Aqeel Malik clarified that Army Chief’s tenure is officially five years and that no new notification is required for extending it.
Speaking in interview with foreign media outlet, Malik addressed swirling speculation following the 26th Constitutional Amendment. The recent amendment increased the Army Chief’s term to five years, granting current Chief an additional two-year extension.
As questions emerged in some circles about whether a new notification was needed under the amended law, but Malik clarified.
The minister also debunked circulating claims that Article 243 of the Constitution gives constitutional status to the honorary rank of Field Marshal. “These claims are baseless. False news is spreading on social media,” he said, stressing that the government keeps the public informed about all important matters.
Aqeel suggested that the two ranks should remain separate, noting that the Army Chief is a four-star general, while a Field Marshal is a five-star honorary rank with a different nature.
Addressing another speculation, Malik rejected the idea that a Field Marshal could replace the President as the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, calling such talk premature and unfounded. “These matters relate to national security, and it would be inappropriate to comment further,” he added.
Meanwhile, the government’s consultations on the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment have entered their final stage. Malik confirmed that the draft amendment is almost ready and could be presented to Parliament this week. “If consensus is reached, it may be passed this month,” he said confidently, highlighting ongoing talks with both allied parties and the opposition.
Consultations on the 27th Amendment continued with key allies on Thursday, including a seven-member MQM delegation led by Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, leaders of the Istehkam Pakistan Party, and federal ministers. Notable attendees included Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, and several others, reflecting the high stakes of the ongoing political maneuvers.
With rumors, constitutional amendments, and potential international military involvement swirling, the government’s next moves are being watched closely, making Pakistan’s political landscape more dramatic than ever.
