The death toll from a devastating flash flood in Nepal’s Himalayan region bordering China’s Tibet has climbed to 95, police said on Wednesday.
Rgional climate monitoring organisation said the flooding was caused by the sudden drainage of a supraglacial lake in Tibet.
Flash floods swept through villages and infrastructure project sites in Nepal’s Rasuwa district, prompting authorities to warn residents living near rivers to move to safer, elevated areas.
According to media reports, Nepal’s Tourism Ministry said 341 foreign nationals were missing after the floods struck the region. The settlements of Syapru Besi and Timure were among the worst-hit areas.
Authorities urged people living along the Bhote Koshi River to remain vigilant as the situation developed. Rasuwa District Administrator Narendra Pariyar said officials had received reports that villages and construction sites had been washed away. He said the scale of casualties and property damage was not immediately clear, but warned that the losses could be significant.
Prime Minister Balendra Shah said government agencies, security personnel and rescue teams had been mobilised to assist those affected and conduct relief operations. Authorities also instructed residents in low-lying areas to relocate to safer locations and advised communities near the river to remain alert.
The Bhote Koshi originates in Tibet before flowing into Nepal, where it joins the Trishuli River, which eventually enters India as the Gandak River.
