IN the wake of the ongoing Israeli aggression and humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has emerged as a steadfast advocate for the Palestinian cause. His call during the extraordinary BRICS summit to cease weapon exports to Israel reflects the Kingdom’s unwavering commitment to ending the violence and promoting a comprehensive peace process.
This is a crucial step, considering the significant role played by major arms exporters, especially the United States, in fuelling the conflict. It is important that other Muslim countries also align their voices with Saudi Arabia, collectively pressing influential capitals, particularly Washington, to halt military support to Israel. The statement by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken during a meeting with the Israeli Prime Minister pledging continuous support for Israel has only emboldened the oppressor, further intensifying the persecution of innocent Palestinians. There is a need for a shift in approach, away from militarization and towards diplomatic negotiations as the pathway to a lasting solution. Dialogue needs to be prioritized over arms shipments. We really laud the tireless efforts made by Saudi Arabia since the beginning of the conflict to protect civilians in the Gaza Strip. The Kingdom’s commitment to humanitarian relief and its call for collective action emphasize the need for global solidarity in addressing the immediate crisis while working towards a sustainable resolution. This requires the involvement of impartial and honest brokers, with countries like the United States playing a pivotal role in fostering meaningful negotiations. As one of the major stakeholders in the region and a longstanding ally of Israel, the US holds a unique position to influence the trajectory of the conflict. To facilitate a just and enduring solution, the US must transcend partisan considerations and act as an unbiased mediator, encouraging both parties to engage in constructive dialogue. A commitment to the principles of justice, human rights and international law should guide the actions of influential nations, ensuring that the pursuit of peace takes precedence over geopolitical interests. By assuming the role of an honest broker, the United States and other influential nations can contribute significantly to the creation of a stable and sustainable resolution.
