Maritime trade push

The decision to accelerate work on establishing a one-door facilitation centre in Karachi for port-related businesses is a welcome step towards making Pakistan’s maritime sector more efficient and competitive. Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry directed officials to expedite the initiative so that port-related services can be accessed under one roof.

The importance of such a facility cannot be overstated. Businesses dealing with ports often have to navigate multiple departments, approvals and procedures, adding to costs and delays. A genuine one-door system can reduce bureaucratic hurdles, improve transparency and make it easier for traders, exporters, importers and shipping companies to do business. Its success, however, will depend on bringing all relevant agencies into the system and making the process genuinely seamless. The importance of Pakistan’s ports has also grown amid the continuing conflict and disruptions in the Middle East. Changing shipping patterns and uncertainty along some regional routes have highlighted strategic value of alternative maritime gateways. With Karachi, Port Qasim and Gwadar, Pakistan is geographically well placed to capture a larger share of regional trade and trans-shipment. The Prime Minister’s Task Force on Maritime Affairs has also undertaken several initiatives aimed at unlocking the sector’s potential. Such efforts need to be sustained and translated into practical improvements at ports and related institutions. Pakistan has immense potential to become a regional trans-shipment hub, but location alone cannot deliver that ambition. International shipping lines require efficient infrastructure, competitive costs, predictable regulations, quick clearances and reliable services. Every unnecessary procedural barrier therefore needs to be removed. The opportunity is significant, particularly as regional trade routes undergo change. We must move with urgency. If ports are made faster, more efficient and business-friendly, Karachi, Port Qasim and Gwadar can serve as important hubs connecting the region to global markets.SP
