LHC orders release of PTI leaders, workers

The Lahore High Court on Friday suspended the detention of Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Asad Umar and others, ordering the release Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf workers and leaders who had voluntarily offered arrests in connection with the ‘Jail Bharo’ (fill the prisons) movement.

Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh was hearing a plea filed by senior PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry seeking release of party leaders and workers after chairman Imran Khan called off the movement.

As proceedings commenced, Justice Sheikh asked how this petition was maintainable as PTI leaders had offered their arrests on their own whim and neither the government nor anyone else had initiated their detention. How can this detention be declared unconstitutional, asked Justice Sheikh.
