LONDON – UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Monday that he would resign, paving the way for the election of a new leader before Parliament returns in September.
Starmer also announced he will resign as leader of the Labour Party. He has become the sixth prime minister in UK to resign in a decade.
During his address, the outgoing premier said he inherited Labour Party that was “politically, financially and morally bankrupt”.

He said he had been told repeatedly that the party was “finished,” but insisted he had proven his critics wrong.
Starmer said he has informed the King Charles about his decision to resign as prime minister.
He has asked the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee to set out a leadership election timetable, with nominations opening on July 9 and the process completed before Parliament’s summer recess.
Until then he will remain in post as prime minister, he said.
Starmer said he will spend the post-resignation time on “the most important job”.
“Being the best husband I can, to my fantastic wife Vic, who has been a rock by my side through good times and bad,” he says, fighting back the emotion of the moment.
“And being the best dad that I can to my beautiful children, who are my pride and joy,” he concluded.
