The mastermind of the June 27 terrorist attack on a Pakistan Rangers camp in Karachi, along with individuals who smuggled weapons for the attackers, has been arrested.
Speaking at a joint press conference at the Central Police Office alongside Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ghulam Nabi Memon, and senior Counter Terrorism Department officials on Tuesday, CTD SSP Irfan Bahadur shared details of the investigation into the deadly attack.
Three Pakistan Rangers (Sindh) personnel embraced martyrdom, and four others were injured when militants attacked the Rangers camp on June 27. Security forces killed three attackers during the operation, while a fourth suspect was captured in an injured condition.
SSP Bahadur said the attack was orchestrated from Afghanistan, where the planners allegedly issued operational instructions and arranged the supply of weapons and explosives used in the assault.
He identified Muhammad Bashir as the mastermind, stating that he was arrested following the attack. Investigators believe Bashir managed the operation’s logistics with the assistance of 13 facilitators.
According to the CTD, the four-member militant group — identified as Janan, Hadi, Umar, and Usman — entered Pakistan from Afghanistan before travelling from Hub Chowki to Karachi’s Korangi area, where they stayed until carrying out the attack.
Bahadur said Janan acted as the suicide bomber, detonating explosives at the camp’s entrance to create a breach that enabled the remaining three attackers to enter the premises.
The SSP added that the injured suspect, Usman, admitted during interrogation that the group had received training at multiple camps in Afghanistan. Investigators also recovered videos documenting preparations for the attack and recorded statements linked to a training facility operated by the Indian proxy group Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, he said.
Sindh Home Minister stated that the assault involved four militants, including three Afghan nationals and one resident of Bajaur district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He said the operation was directed by handlers based in Afghanistan, while Rangers successfully neutralised three attackers and apprehended the fourth despite his injuries.
IGP said the objective of the attack was to undermine peace and stability in Karachi. He added that preliminary findings indicated the logistical network and weapons used in the attack had originated from Afghanistan, and that the case was being further investigated by law enforcement and intelligence agencies.
