NEW YORK – Millions of Muslims around the world are commemorating Ashura today, and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani turned to timeless legacy of Hazrat Imam Hussain R.A, as he delivered powerful message on justice, sacrifice and standing against oppression. His tribute connected the spirit of Karbala with New York’s diverse communities and their shared pursuit of a more just society.
Mamdani marked Ashura on Friday with a powerful message linking the martyrdom of Imam Hussein to the universal struggle for justice, urging New Yorkers to draw inspiration from the values of faith, sacrifice and resistance against oppression.

Mamdani described Ashura as a day of remembrance, reflection and sacrifice, saying the occasion serves as a timeless reminder of Imam Hussein’s unwavering commitment to truth and human dignity.
Referring to 10th day of Muharram, NYC Muslim mayor said Imam Hussein’s legacy continues to inspire people to uphold faith, serve their communities and remain steadfast in the pursuit of justice, adding that these principles remain as relevant today as they were centuries ago.
Mamdani also used the occasion to celebrate New York City’s religious diversity, saying the city’s strength comes from its many faith communities and their shared determination to confront injustice. He expressed hope that those values would continue to guide efforts to build a fairer and more inclusive city for every New Yorker.
Mamdani’s Ashura message is the latest example of his public embrace of his faith since becoming New York City’s first Muslim mayor after assuming office on January 1, 2026.
Earlier this year, he actively participated in Eid al-Fitr celebrations marking the end of Ramadan, attending dozens of iftar gatherings and joining prayer services across all five boroughs before concluding the day with prayers in Brooklyn.
The mayor also joined thousands of worshippers during Eid al-Adha prayers at Macombs Dam Park in the Bronx, where he attracted attention by wearing a traditional tunic inspired by the colours of English Premier League club Arsenal.
At the same time, Mamdani has sought to strengthen ties beyond the city’s Muslim communities. During both his mayoral campaign and his time in office, he has visited synagogues and attended Rosh Hashanah services as part of wider outreach efforts to New York’s Jewish community.
